Jazz Is Dead & Arthur Verocai
What happens when you go to a concert based on an tastefully targeted TikTok ad? As it turns out: magic can happen.
A few weeks ago, I was scrolling mindlessly on my For You page and came across a captivating ad. It was a beautifully edited orchestral moment featuring the beloved Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai hosted by the organization Jazz Is Dead. I’ve been listening to a ton of bossa nova and jazz all summer so it was obvious to me that the algorithm knew me too well. I wasn’t mad! I bought the ticket on a whim.
Concert day rolled around and I realized it was happening on a Sunday evening. Instant regret and hesitation: I’m going to be exhausted on Monday, I thought. There’s too much traffic. Excuse after excuse rolled around in my mind.
Long story short: I ended up going thanks to an odd unfurling of spontaneity that day. In fact, I went from hesitating to go at all to attending music experiences (Head In the Clouds and Arthur Verocai) back-to-back. I made a TikTok storytime about it. Moral of the story is to stay open to spontaneity when you feel resistance.
Five stars. I cried, I smiled, I danced. It was my first time attending a bossa nova, orchestral, and jazz experience and I loved every minute of it. I learned a lot about the mission of Jazz Is Dead which was founded by music producers Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest), concert producer Andrew Lojero and industry veteran Adam Block.

Red Bull Music Academy interviewed Arthur Verocai awhile back.
The quirkiest browser Arc by Browser Company is now out of beta.
I liked the format! Using photobooth + the browser is such a good idea (might steal that lol). It was also cool hearing your thoughts behind each of the links (I liked the context?); made me think about the sort of things I read and why I like reading them!
